Today, the Homify team is off to Japan where we explore a wonderful piece of architecture in the culturally rich city of Nagoya. Given that Japan is known worldwide for its architecture, we have set our expectations high. As you arrive, you realize that architecture in Japan is influenced heavily by the spirit of Zen Buddhism. Buildings often display areas that are spartan, simple and mystically empty. The house that we visit today displays is no different. Beautifully designed by the very talented crew at Sakurayama Architectural Design; architects based in Sakurayama of Showa-ku, Nagoya, this house displays simple clean lines, subtle contrasts and artful additions of nature which create that connection with the Zen spirit.

One thing that immediately stands out about this architectural piece is the wonderful play of light and space, which also adds a new dimension to the design of this place. A spacious property, it’s the ideal house for a big family that loves its children, get-togethers and natural spaces. Once inside the house, you forget the industrial look of the neighbourhood and the seeming lack of greenery around. Here is one place, where space, light, and nature calm the soul. So, lets begin exploring!

A first look: Clean and cool looks

As you drive into the house, one senses the privacy the white walls exude. Designed to be a one-storey wooden house, the facade presents a no-fuss view of the exteriors. A separate gate for the garage is visible and the house itself bordered by a green hedge.

Facade Up Close: Beauty in Space

Turn to go into the house and one sees how space has been artfully turned into beautiful living areas. The open-to-sky mini garden leads into the living room, while the rest of the rooms border the sides of the house. While the inside of the house is not directly visible, the wide open spaces predict happy family times, complete with pets. A home with no stairs to climb is a boon for many a family, with elders and children especially. And why would one need a terrace, when a home has huge grounds around it!

The home with a view

This house is built to be the epitome of a large family that likes to live comfortably. A walk onto the side of the house from the entrance leads to the spacious rooms, each with a view of the common space outside. Right at the front is the theatre room with its long French windows opening out to a wooden deck. The deck brings up images of a warm summer afternoon, with the family around a picnic lunch and deck chairs sprawled about. The space can accommodate any number of people, with its zero-clutter feel. A lot of thought has gone into the little windows on top of each room, it not only allows light at all times, but also contributes to cross ventilation.

Gardens: Being one with nature

This is the entrance to the living area of the house. A small but neatly laid out garden, that is open to the sky ensures both air and light into the home. The partly sheltered alcove can also accomodate a deck chair or two for a cosy night out. Here the colour white is not just of the walls, but also of the pebbles used. Not only does the white add to the feeling of no-clutter and spaciousness, it also lends a feeling of airy coolness. The space is yet another reminder of the closeness to nature that the house promises.

The Contemporary Kitchen: Style and Sensibility

The spacious kitchen brings out the contemporary, yet aesthetic look and feel. The kitchen is literally the heart of the home, and a well lit one ensures good cheer and vibrations in the family. Here the windows maximise the natural light and with a little practical, subdued lighting, this space conjures up images of a family bonding over meals. With the stovetop and the sink in the centre, the design facilitates a participatory family time. A small television screen multiples the comfort quotient. After all, a happy family is one that is fed well!

Living the good life

Open to the azure skies, this house has wide open spaces on all sides of it. The high ceilings allow excellent cross ventilation and ensure coolness in the hot weather. There is a certain tranquility that surrounds this house. The architects have put in a lot of thought in bringing together nature in all its elements in the vast space available, without taking away elegance and style from the architecture.
