You may be wondering just what exactly washi tape is. With a cute name that’s fun to say, we are pleased to inform you that washi tape is just as cute and sweet as it sounds. Specifically, washi tape is a colourful adhesive, with a texture similar to masking tape, that originated in Japan. Nowadays the tape, which comes in many different colours and patterns, is the latest craze on Pinterest. This is largely because like its blander cousin, masking tape, washi is safe to use on any number of surfaces.

Due to its fun patterns, many people are even using washi tape purely for decoration. Therefore, washi comes with virtually limitless uses for decorating your otherwise boring stuff and surfaces in the home! Today we will be introducing you to some of our favourite ways to use washi tape. Enjoy!

Washi tape: what is it and why it's super convenient to use!

As we’ve already mentioned, washi tape is a colourful tape similar to masking tape. Just like masking tape, washi is safe to use on many different surfaces, unlike other varieties that leave residue or strip off paint when removed. In fact, washi tape is even more delicate and gentle on your surfaces than masking tape!

The tape is made of paper and natural materials including bamboo, hemp, and even tree bark. As a result, the tape takes on many of the characteristics of these natural fibres. Namely, washi is durable where you need it to be while also being safe to use on a multitude of surfaces. Washi tape comes not only in a vast array of colours and patterns, but also in many different widths.

Which one is the best to choose?

For the most part, choosing washi tape simply depends on the patterns and colours you like best. Simply select one that you fancy, or a selection that will go nicely within an existing colour scheme in the home. As for the width, the varying sizes of the washi tape will allow you to better match the surfaces on which you would like to apply it.

For example, putting washi on the spines of books is quite easy because you just have to select the tape that comes in a width that matches the book. The same goes for the edges of shelves. At this point you may be thinking that this booming trend is going to cost you. No need to fear. A pack of 8 different rolls will cost less than 50 ringgits. Not bad!

Washi tape as fancy cover for the light switch

Washi tape is especially great for all those bland little details of the home or apartment that could use a bit of sprucing up. This includes jars, planners, containers, tea candles and even light switches. This example of a light switch by homify photography depicts just one way you can use patterned washi tape to enhance the look of a plain white light switch.

Here you can also get a good look at the delicate texture of the tape. You can surround the perimeter, create designs, or even cover the whole thing! Of course, you can also use monochromatic washi tape to change the look of your light switch. Since there are so many different kinds of washi tape, you’re bound to find one that fits your tastes and coordinates well with your existing décor.

Washi tape as a bi-dimensional frame for your pictures and photos

Many people can relate to the experience of having a bunch of photos you’d like to hang up but didn’t because you lacked proper frames for doing so. Frames are expensive and often require customisation. Washi tape can work as a bi-dimensional frame at a fraction of the cost! Simply create a border with the tape around your favourite photo, and it has a frame!

To make the look have a 3-dimensional feel, try placing a larger border around the first. Voila! The result is funky and completely unique. This is a fun way for your kids to take hanging artwork in their rooms into their own hands.

Washi tape to make your kid's bedroom stand out

Speaking of the kids, the bright and bold patterns of many types of washi tapes are sure to appeal to your little ones. Because the tape is impermanent and is safe to use on the walls, giving your children a roll or two (or more!) for personalising their bedrooms is an excellent way to give them some creative freedom without worrying about creating any kind of personal mark on the walls, floors, or furniture.

Even a simple application of washi tape to make initials adds vibrancy and helps to better incorporate different colours into the room. Here, fore example, pink and white washi ties the hot pink beanbag into the existing décor in an effortless way.

Washi tape to pimp up your kitchen/ entrance/ living room

While we’ve discussed the ways that washi tape is fun for the kids, it certainly doesn’t have to be limited to them! There are lots of washi styles that will appeal to your more grown-up tastes as well. You can use the tapes to dress up your day planner, add some sophistication to little tea candles or even to brighten up your kitchen shelving, as we can see in this example. Washi tape will also to wonders to your bookshelves or to the edges of desks and tables.

Feel free to test out many different styles and options under the assurance that you can merely take the washi tape off without any harm to your belongings if you change your mind or would like to try a different pattern instead.
