‘Hard-wearing’ is the key term when picking out flooring options for areas in our homes prone to heavy traffic, like hallways and living rooms. For the kitchen and bathroom, it’s vital to go with a floor surface that can withstand a lot of spills and splashes. But how about the bedroom? It’s the space where we sleep, sure, but it’s not like we fall into a coma upon entering it. We do also walk around in our bedrooms (especially from the wardrobe to the bed and/or en-suite bathroom), so the floor needs to be comfy, yet not too hard and durable (if you though that, for instance, tiles is the perfect answer, you are way off).

So, what are our options for bedroom flooring? Let’s find out!

1. Bedroom flooring: What are the choices?

Carpet is the answer! Waking up and setting your feet down on a soft and warm carpet is not only appealing but also practical – after all, feeling the chill of a cold tile floor on your bare feet when you’re barely awake might just ruin your entire day.

But carpet is not our only option – a natural floor covering made from plant fibres is just as welcoming, hence the growing popularity of hard surfaces like wood flooring. Plus, wood can slot into any interior style (from modern and contemporary to Scandinavian and rustic), making it a very practical choice.

2. Bedroom flooring: Carpet and natural materials

Want to make getting out of bed every morning a more agreeable experience? Consider both carpet and natural floor covering.

Bear in mind that your bedroom carpet doesn’t require the same hard-wearing characteristics it does for other more open spaces, like a living room or dining area. In the bedroom you can save with a lighter weight of the same carpet used elsewhere in the house, or flaunt a super lavish design with a plush surface and deep pile. Your home’s other rooms might require a wool carpet blended with man-made fibres for wear and tear, but it doesn’t have to be the case with bedroom carpeting.

And what about colours? That’s the other amazing thing about bedrooms: here, your flooring surface can flaunt colours that would be considered most impractical in other parts of the house. After all, not everyone walks around in your bedroom the same way they do in, say your hallway. Thus, a very pale colour scheme (off-white, cream, dusty beige) can be opted for if you live by a no-shoes policy in your bedroom.

For a bit more interest, natural flooring is another great choice. We recommend sisal and seagrass (both terrific textures for bare feet), as well as jute (which has a super silky underfoot sensation).

3. Bedroom flooring: Wood

For a more hardened look and feel, wood flooring is a prime choice for the bedroom floor. Sure, it’s nowhere near as soft as carpet, but it also doesn’t have the coldness and aloof feel that tile floors can have.

And let’s not forget how those wooden floors can add some colour, texture and pattern to your bedroom. Plus, you can always cover up select surfaces (like where you get in and out of bed) for a soft underfoot feeling.

For a more practical approach (winter is coming, after all), solid wood can be treated to underfloor heating, but we must insist that you check with your supplier before opting for this! Furthermore, scratches and dents can easily be remedied, and wood flooring is rather easy to clean and maintain.

4. Bedroom flooring: Engineered wood

The main difference between solid wood and engineered wood is that engineered wood consists of layers combined to make a board that’s more stable. In addition to being practical, engineered wood also flaunts an extra luxurious and rich look.

If this sounds more like your style, we recommend investing in a high-quality version that has a top layer of solid wood at least 7mm thick. And before buying or installing anything, check if that engineered wood is compatible with underfloor heating – it should be, but just check to make sure.

5. Bedroom flooring: Laminate

Stuck on a small budget, but totally in love with the look of wooden floors? Then let’s talk about laminate flooring.

Although it won’t feel like a wooden floor 100%, laminate does present the same colours and patterns that a regular wooden floor does. It’s also completely compatible with underfloor heating, which means it’ll be a pleasure to step on during cold winter mornings.

And as the bedroom is generally not a high-traffic space, you can be sure that your laminate flooring will last much longer. However, be sure to invest in the best quality so that it flaunts the appearance of timber as closely as possible – cheaper versions won’t pull this off so successfully.

6. Bedroom flooring: Vinyl

Another budget option is vinyl flooring, which can also present the look (if not the feel) of a wooden surface. Top-notch vinyl floors also present a soft and yielding underfoot feeling, and is quite quiet when stepped on.

7. Bedroom flooring: For the kids’ spaces

Of course children’s bedrooms also need to be practical and beautiful – perhaps with a tad more focus on the practical part, seeing as the little ones also use their flooring surfaces for playing, rolling around, lounging, doing homework, etc. And let’s not forget factors like easy-cleaning and stain-proof.

Our recommendation? Vinyl flooring due to its soft and warm surfaces. And linoleum, which is made up of almost entirely natural materials and is a dream for allergy sufferers. Rubber flooring also ensures a soft and pleasant option for a child’s bedroom, while laminate scores lots of points for being so easy to care for.

And carpet? If you must then go for it, but we recommend spending a bit of time searching for stain-resistant polypropylene or a wool blend. And avoid a loop pile that can easily snag – you don’t want it to get damaged due to them playing with toys?
