This extensive renovation project is located in the Cedofeita area of Porto, Portugal and was completed by Floret Arquitectura. The late nineteenth/early twentieth century building was completely re-organised to suit the living conditions of the family of five whom were to occupy it; comprising, among the usual programmatic elements, a separate workspace and library.

The finished design shows but a few traces of it's origin; namely the construction quality and the front street facade. Now, let's take a closer look and see the incredible transformation that has taken place!

The unassuming original street front

From the street, the modest and traditional facade give no hint to the extensive restoration that has taken place. The home is wedged between its neighbors, inconspicuous and respectful of the context. But wait until you get beyond the cover and see the contemporary transformation that has taken place inside!

Kitchen division

Connections between the various spaces and activities of the home creates a sense of harmony, while providing the means to separate them enables the occupants to adapt their space according to changing scenarios and situations. Division and connection enter into a fluid interplay. Here we can see the timber box which encloses the kitchen, concealing it from the other social spaces of the home.

Kitchen connection

When the sliding panel is moved across, a second axial link cuts through the space and the kitchen is opened to the living space at one end and the dining space at the other end.

There are various ways to achieve division, connection, and a hybrid of the two. Through the use of movable partitions, changing levels, and a variety of materials, we can create gradients of openness and closure. The contemporary home is no longer a static space; rather, it offers adaption as a response to the many demands and opportunities of the changing world we live in.

Dark and sophisticated

The kitchen is simple and beautiful. The all-black aesthetic is interrupted but a few times; a white tiled splash-back and butlers sink dramatically contrast the black surfaces, while the timber floor provides a more subtle change in hue and texture.

An opening is made between the kitchen bench and the hallway, acting almost as a servery window. This kitchen is sophisticated, thoughtful and an intelligent use of space. For more kitchen ideas, take a look here!

The master bedroom

This bedroom is simple and understated, but delightfully so. The crisp white walls are interrupted by a stone wall behind the bed which introduces a haptic quality to the space. Timber floors compliment the window framing that enclose two generous windows, flooding ample amounts of natural light into the space and offering views of the garden. There is nothing amiss in this beautifully refined space – for more bedroom ideas, take a look here!

The kids room

This second, child's bedroom is a touch more playful. The roof line is made visible by the sloping ceiling and an asymmetry is established by the bed nook. The bed nook is lined in strand-board and wraps around the corner to form a storage unit. What a wonderful little space that is both refined and thoughtfully composed. Every detail is considered and elegant.

The back facade

The back face of the home assumes an entirely different appearance and quality to that of the street facing, front facade. The cladding is earthy and contemporary . It allows the home to be as porous or as hermitic as it likes – closing itself off entirely from the outside world, or peeling back and opening up to the wonderful outdoor space.

Open or closed – your choice!

The spatial flexibility that is demonstrated in the interior is also employed in the exterior. What an incredible home that can be molded to the given situation!
