Plants are wellness powerhouses for any home. They provide you with multiple virtues while simultaneously making your home look great. First of all, they purify your air. We’re sure you know that plants convert carbon dioxide into oxygen, and the plants you bring into your home are certainly no exception. Oxygen affects every part of your body and even your mind, and assuring that you have good quality air is essential to anyone’s wellbeing. Another thing plants are good for is for their produce. A lot of people don’t live in climates where they can plant something like a lemon tree in their backyard, but did you know that dwarf versions of these plants exist? Indoors, they thrive. Aside from lemon trees, there’s a plethora of herb plants you can buy and grow indoors for fresh ingredients while cooking. Having these plants in your home is as local and organic as it gets.

What to avoid

As with any home project you begin, there are certain things you should be aware of and avoid. The first thing you should avoid is buying plants that are potentially harmful for you and your loved ones. Most plants are perfectly safe, but if you have inquisitive children or a dog that doesn't know how to keep his mouth off of things, there are certain plant species you should avoid purchasing. Daffodils, Dumb Cane, and Easter Lilies are known to cause severe stomach problems, irregular heartbeat, and swelling of the tongue, just to name a few, so staying away from these will save you a lot of trouble in the future. But what should you avoid when you buy the right indoor plants? Well, you should avoid placing your potted plants in trouble spots, such as near air conditioners or heaters, as these artificial temperature controllers will screw up your plant’s natural growth cycle. You should also be wary to not overwater your plants or spray pesticides on them.

Lavender

Lavender is a gorgeous houseplant and the perfect addition to any home. Growing lavender indoors allows you to utilize it as a culinary herb or crafting material, and it even provides some medicinal properties. When deciding on a location for your lavender plant, you need to consider sunlight and air flow. Pick a spot with lots of natural sunlight, so placing it near a window so they can get as much sunlight as possible is the best place. Lavender also needs fresh air to rejuvenate, so open that window for a few hours each day to get a good breeze in and keep your lavender healthy. You want to make sure your lavender is in quality soil, too. You can enrich the soil by adding in agricultural lime juice. This gives the lavender extra nutrients. After planting your lavender, water it thoroughly. You may be tempted to be generous with watering considering how thirsty your lavender plant seems, but you should always allow the plant to dry out before watering it again. The soil should be dry to the touch.

Basil

Growing basil indoors is pretty uncomplicated. All you need to do is make sure your basil is planted in well drainable, nutrient rich soil with plenty of sunlight. Using proper soil is important because basil is not tolerant of a lot of water, so a pot that provides adequate drainage is crucial. The soil should never be soggy, as the roots will be prone to rotting, but you do want it to be somewhat moist. Additionally, growing basil indoors requires proper lighting. Basil requires at least six hours of sunlight, so placing it near a sunny window – preferably facing south – is ideal. If you don’t have a sunny window like this, you can use fluorescent lights, but with these, your plant will need about ten hours of light for healthy growth.

Mint

Tons of people grow mint in their garden, and for those who know sturdy this herb is, it’s no surprise that it can also thrive indoors. You can grow mint in a pot of soil or even in a bottle of water. For potted mint, you need a container with adequate drainage. A good potting mix is also required – either a regular commercial type, or one with equal parts sand, peat, and perlite. Make sure to water your mint well after planting and put it in an area with indirect sunlight, ideally facing East during spring and summer, and West or South during fall and winter. You’ll want to keep your mint plant at an average temperature of 20 degrees Celcius during the day, and about 14 degrees Celcius at night. If you want to grow your mint hydroponically, however, just take tip cuttings of about ten centimeters in length, remove the bottom leaves, and place the stalks in water. Set them in a sunny window and let them soak in the sun for four to six hours a day.

Coffee plant

Coffee plants are considered to be among the easiest and hardiest of houseplants, suitable for both new and experienced gardeners. Coffee plants prefer bright, yet indirect sunlight, so they should be placed near a window but not directly in the window itself. They can’t survive temperatures below freezing, naturally, but they also won't survive if they’re below a constant temperature of 18 degrees Celcius, so keep them warm and away from drafty areas. The soil in the pot needs to stay moist, but don’t soak it. Again, this plant requires proper drainage to stay healthy. The absolute best thing about growing your own coffee plant indoors is that you’ll never have to go to the store to buy your morning coffee ever again! This of course saves you tons of money in coffee purchases.
