Arranging your living room can be a tough job, especially if you already have furniture. You have to measure up the room and the furniture, figure out what's going to fit and where it will go, then actually move everything, and even after all that you can't be sure that it's going to work as well as you might have hoped until it's all in place. But once you have finally figured out the layout of the living room there's often one space that we just can't seem to find a use for, that annoying little gap behind the sofa!

If you know this pain all too well, then take solace, because we've got your back. Today we're going to show how to use that gap to maximise the space available in your home, improve your decor, and tie a room together with a few simple solutions, this way you'll see the gap behind your sofa as an opportunity rather than an annoyance. Don't believe us? Just take a look!

1. Potted plants

We recommend you fill your home with as many potted plants as possible, and that annoying little gap is the perfect place to start. Plants will purify the air, fill your home with fresh and intoxicating aromas, and just looking at them promotes peace and tranquility. Plus if you plant a tall tree or shrub it will form a canopy over the couch and make it feel like you're sitting in the jungle!

2. A bookshelf

This idea is all about maximising space. At a height just above the top of the couch install a custom bookshelf on the wall. If you're not ready to take on a project like this yourself, there's plenty of professionals who would love to help!

The bookshelf can then be used for books, appliances, storage, or just to display ornaments and knick knacks. This way the negative space behind your sofa is being used in a practical way that reduces the need for furniture elsewhere, keeping the room spacious and clear of clutter.

3. A lamp

If you're a fan of curling up on the sofa with a good book for hours on end, then this is the solution for you. A lamp is a great idea for that annoying gap because they are lightweight and easy to move when necessary, but more importantly a curved lamp like this can be positioned directly above your book, or used to cast moody shadows across the room.

4. A shelf for ornaments

We're always looking for surface space in the living room as it's one of the most decorated areas in the home, so running a shelf along the back wall behind the sofa is a great option that saves space, and looks great.

5. Console table

Console tables are traditionally used for entranceways and corridors, meaning they are specifically designed for narrow spaces. This makes them the perfect candidate for that area behind the couch. You can then decorate them with anything you like, such as family photographs or ornaments. Alternately they provide a perfect place to put your drink, eliminating the need for a coffee table, and opening up the floor plan of the living room!

6. Unorthodox shelving

For a really unique addition to your home decor try custom shelves in an unorthodox shape, such as this fantastic timber creation, behind the sofa. This way you can use them for a variety of things such as stereos and televisions.

And there you have it, no more wasted space in your living room! For more great tips, check out this article on making your home look opulent on a small budget.
