When renovations of old homes occur, one of the first things that disappear are the walls. No longer do owners want small segmented rooms, but instead, they wish to open up rooms, creating one giant super room, which makes the whole apartment feel more spacious and lively.
This is exactly what the architects over at Zoom had in mind, when they were reworking this lovely, old Sao Paulo apartment. Marrying the open space with some incredibly interesting urban design, this is a place that will never cease to amaze.
Despite being part of one very large room, the dining room never feels crowded, thanks to the high ceiling that helps create an airy atmosphere, and the cleverly, and minimally designed, shelves. The shelving especially is great, as it provides a place to store all sorts of books and plants, and does so much without taking up too much space.
Another thing that helps the room seem so open are the colours. While a lot of the background is white, the light brown floor and yellow cabinets are both very warm colours, and immediately liven up the room. This is also helped by the large window and the lights that add an extra yellowish tinge in the evening.
Finally, while the balcony may be small, it's perfect for an evening sit and chat with friends and loved ones.
The kitchen continues the palette of the dining room and even doubles down on the yellow, giving it a big, bold pop of fun, bright colour. The floor also cleverly transitions from the single brown to tiles of various different browns, combining the previous shade with a much lighter one. The wallpaper also does something different, as the exposed brick wall gives the corner a work space feel, which acts as a great motivator to make delicious food. And that can be easily done, as this corner is perfectly equipped for just that. Complete with a stove, microwave and fridge, you'll be whipping up delicacies in no time.
And finally, similarly to the bookshelf in the dining room, the kitchen uses shelves with an interesting hole patterns instead of typical handles. While the holes may seem rather odd at first, upon further examination, you will discover that they actually copy the constellations straight from the night sky! Meaning that no matter where you go, the stars will always be shining for you.
Found at the very end of the large room, is a small corner that lends itself to sitting down, chatting and listening/playing some music. The corner is mostly white as it is farther away from the yellow cabinets, but it makes its own mark on the room by featuring a multi coloured carpet that fits in well with the dark wood armchairs. Nearby, you'll also find a bookshelf, which means your favorite novel is always within reach.
Finally, if it's snowing outside and you don't wish to go on the balcony, this spot is the perfect place to sit down with a book, a cup of hot cocoa and watch the snow paint the city white.
The bedroom gets away from the lively colours of the previous rooms, and instead goes for a calmer pallet of white and very light browns. However, seeing as this room is meant of rest and relaxation, the quieter shades are a better choice as they will let you drift off to your dreams without any interruption.
The large window pour sunlight into the room and during the day, and brighten up the room considerably, while at night, it'll give you an amazing view of the city outside. The wall closet, which uses the same star patterns that the kitchen cabinets do, provides plenty of room to store all your clothes while the bed, with its inviting duvet and pillow patterns, will no doubt cradle you off to your dreams.
Continuing the design of the previous room, the bathroom introduces a light granite grey to the mixture, highlighting the sink corner and the walk-in shower. The shower even has an added bonus as the entire area uses tiles, which gives it a distinct feel. The colours work very well thanks to the frosted window, which provides plenty of light, giving the room a very airy and modern feel.
The sink also comes with a large mirror, meaning that multiple people can use it and has plenty of space around the sides, and even in the cabinets below, for your morning rituals. Finally, the facilities are all up to date, meaning that you'll get that nice warm wash, at the end of a long hard day without any problems.
