Gabion walls are not a common occurrence. The word comes from the Italian gabbione, which translates as big cage. Which is, essentially, what they are. They are cages filled with rocks! The look can be off putting at times, but they do serve a purpose too.

A gabion wall, is a retaining wall. Stones are stacked inside cages and tied up with wire. This makes them solid, secure and resistant to being washed away. Built against slopes, they provide a needed barrier to stop erosion and general collapse. They are better in many ways than other options, as they can bend and conform with any soil movement or water flow. But just because they are practical, it does not mean they have to be unpleasant to look at. We have found 10 walls for you to look at to see just how they work and how they can be added to a garden where one is required, and still look good.

Barely noticeable

A garden can be anything you like. It can have a seating area, vegetable patch, beautiful lights, or it can be minimalistic. We tend to think of minimalism as just being for inside the home. A garden can have just as much, or as little, as you like. This garden is a prime example of keeping it simple. By Charles Worth Design, we are enamoured with how clean cut it all is. The sophistication makes it perfect for adults and children alike to enjoy it. The pebble filled gabon wall hides a concrete boundary, and is barely noticeable at this distance.

A house of gabion

We had to mention this house, which has gabion walls all the way round it! Built on a slope, it has stunning 360 degree views all the way round. By building the house entirely of gabion, the idea was to create a house which blended seamlessly with the environment around it. By using traditional materials and methods, we feel they have really pulled this off.

Gabion is a really eco friendly way to build walls, as well as being practical. The life of the wall depends not on the contents of the cage, but the cage itself. It is worth making sure the metal won't corrode at a rate that is too fast. The installers will be able to help you decide which wire is best to use for the length of time you want the wall for. Using it for a house is very different, but they are great at helping conserve energy too.

They stop corrosion

This image shows exactly the context a gabion wall has traditionally been used for. We can see that large rocks have been used in cages, to support the wall behind it, and give more usable space to this garden. The cages can be of varying size to provide support to the most awkward of walls. Over time, the wall fills with silt and other natural debris, that in actual fact, strengthens the wall, rather than weakens it.

Support and more support

The main feature of these walls is, of course, support. Here we can see they have clearly been used as an outer wall to provide adequate drainage to the homes we can see. It looks quite industrial in this setting, but with time and nature, the gabion will only look better.

A winter wonderland

Gabions really do work well all year round. They become part of the landscape due to all of their natural properties. In the summer it will play host to a variety of insects and wildlife, becoming a natural habitat to them. In the winter it is easy to see how nature is just as cruel to the wall, as it is to the wildlife. However, like everything in wintertime, there is a wonderful beauty to it too.

Any size stones

Gabion walls can be made from any sort of rocks, in any size. The key is that they are stacked. You can have stones of any colour you wish, so you can really make it work with the design elements of your garden. If the wall is to be designed, you could have different baskets with different fillings, to really add a sense of art to the garden.

Make it a feature

We all like a bit of decking in our garden, a point maybe and some lights. Anything, really, to make it feel like our own space and sanctuary. Why not use your gabion wall as a feature in itself? This clever looking water feature does just that, and we think it looks so different, it would make any garden stand out. The water comes out like a glass waterfall, landing onto the rock garden below it, before being pulled back up inside the gabion again.

Not the whole picture

Walls don't have to surround the entirety of a property either. They can go exactly where needed and they can become a lovely part of the design. Here we can see just how much pebbles and stones are part of the garden as a whole. This ties the gabion wall in really well and it works on a lot of levels at making the garden look natural. The greenery works in conjunction with the stones and gives some texture to the landscape.

It looks natural

Gabion walls are one of the most natural and eco friendly types of wall you can have. As we have seen, they blend in seamlessly with nature and add a lovely element to the garden. Even if you don't need it as a support wall, it could be worth considering one, just because of all the qualities they offer.
